Despite the initial shock, I had a chance to jump in and try out Diablo Immortal for myself at BlizzCon. Starting off inside a gothic cathedral within the realm of Sanctuary, players are greeted by Deckard Cain who offers a brief tutorial to get them started. From there, the game is surprisingly familiar, with a virtual analog stick and player ability layout reminiscent of classic Diablo games.

As I made my way through the demo's primary dungeon, it became clear that Diablo Immortal is indeed a reskin of other mobile games. The combat feels similar to other action RPGs on the market, and the graphics are polished but not particularly innovative. Even the hub area, Westmarch, feels like a central gathering point rather than a fully-realized environment.

But does it play like Diablo? Well, sort of. Upon entering a new area, I ran into other players, which is where things started to feel more...mobile. The game's design clearly takes cues from other mobile games, with an emphasis on accessibility and ease of play over deep storytelling or complex combat mechanics.

For fans of the series, Diablo Immortal may not be the answer they were hoping for. But for those looking for a new take on the action RPG genre, it could be worth checking out. After all, who doesn't love bashing skeletons with an axe?
